In the Amazigh (Berber) language, Telouet means “meeting room” or “place of gathering”.
Situated in Morocco’s High Atlas mountains, Telouet was historically an important crossroads, where trading caravans and travellers met on the routes connecting the north and south of Morocco.
The band takes its name from this idea of a meeting place: a gathering of old and new musical friends, diverse backgrounds and musical influences, with the freedom to explore and express themselves.
Led by guitarist and composer Jonny Phillips, the sextet brings together Brazilian rhythms, modal jazz, art rock and African blues. Quirky, contemporary drum and percussion grooves meet spacious ambient textures, open improvisations and a distinctive melodic sensibility.
Featuring Jonny Phillips – electric guitar, Ruth Goller – bass, Idris Rahman – saxophone, Adriano Adewale – percussion, Dan Hewson – keys/trombone and Jon Scott – drums.
